Who needs to issue GCT tax invoices
Any business registered for GCT in Jamaica must issue a tax invoice for every taxable supply of goods or services. A tax invoice is not just a payment request — it is a legal document that your customer needs in order to claim input tax credits on their own GCT return.
If you issue an invoice that does not meet TAJ's requirements, your customer cannot claim their input credit. This causes friction with clients, damages your professional reputation and can trigger queries from TAJ during an audit.
Even if your business is below the GCT registration threshold and you are not yet registered, understanding the invoice requirements prepares you for when you do register — and helps you identify whether invoices you receive from suppliers are valid for input credit purposes.
Key distinction: A regular invoice and a GCT tax invoice are different documents. A regular invoice requests payment. A tax invoice is a legal record of a taxable supply that enables the recipient to claim an input tax credit. You cannot use a regular invoice for GCT purposes.

| Description | Qty | Unit Price | Taxable Value | GCT (15%) |

Common invoicing mistakes Jamaican businesses make
1. Not labelling the document "Tax Invoice"
Writing "Invoice" is not sufficient. The document must say "Tax Invoice" — without these words it is not a valid GCT tax invoice regardless of what other information it contains.
2. Missing the GCT registration number
Your TRN and your GCT registration number are different. Many businesses put only their TRN. Both are required on a tax invoice.
3. Showing GCT-inclusive prices without separating the tax
Writing "Total: $65,000 (includes GCT)" is not sufficient. The GCT amount must be shown separately as a line item. Your customer needs to know the exact GCT amount to enter on their return.
4. Non-sequential invoice numbers
Invoice numbers must be sequential and never reused. Gaps in the sequence — from deleting invoices — can trigger questions during a TAJ audit. Use software that manages numbering automatically.
5. Issuing invoices before GCT registration
You cannot issue tax invoices or collect GCT before your registration is confirmed. Collecting GCT without registration is a compliance offence.
